[news.software.nntp] A note on building nntpd with gcc

dem@meaddata.com (David Myers) (02/20/91)

Many of you are probably already aware of this, but it slipped my
mind and stung me when I built nntpd 1.5.11 with gcc 1.39 for B News
and ndbm under SunOS 4.0.3. I thought a reminder to others would be
helpful.

Remember to use the gcc option -fpcc-struct-return when building
nntpd with gcc. The ndbm routines return structures, so you need to
tell gcc to use the common structure return mechanism. If you don't
do this, I've found that the nntpd will appear to function normally,
but accessing articles via Message-ID will not work. If you only use
nntpd for news reading, and don't run a newsreader that can access
articles by Message-ID, you might not even notice a problem.

Other than this, 1.5.11 has worked great here. Thanks, Stan & Co.
