Can anyone help me please ?? The following 3 lines were logged with a (by the way unsuccessful) attempt to transfer news to my machine (refer comp.software.anu-news - "NNTP_XMIT oddities in V6.0-2/Multinet" for a description of what's happenning at the VMS end). Mar 6 08:50:41 localhost: 3883 nntpd: hermes.ucs.unimelb.edu.au connect Mar 6 08:50:41 localhost: 3883 nntpd: access: default xfer no /spool/news/lib/nntp_access Mar 6 08:50:41 localhost: 3883 nntpd: access: *.latrobe.edu.au read post /spool/news/lib/nntp_access This was with nntp 1.5.9. My machine is running Ultrix 4.0. This behaviour is periodic - the connection appears to time out and literally hundreds of connections are tried. Up to today, stopping the feed for a while would fix the problem and allow articles to be transferred. The following two lines were logged after a reboot of the system at system startup: Mar 6 09:35:09 localhost: 127 nntpd: host_access: getpeername: No such device Mar 6 09:35:09 localhost: 127 nntpd: unknown refused connection Are these informational or indicative of a problem? Sometime after reboot, nntp version 1.5.11 was installed, and the machine trying to transfer news simply times out. With full logging on, the only message logged is - Mar 6 16:27:34 localhost: 1988 nntpd: access: castor.ucs.unimelb.edu.au connect - followed by timing stats I believe I must have a number of problems, but I do not know where to start looking! The nntp_access file has: "default xfer no" which I understand to mean anyone can transfer (I have not defined AUTH). Yet, if I do a telnet on port 119 from my own machine and do an IHAVE, I get "Ihave attempted without permission" logged ... at least I am not timed out!
