I am the system administrator for a nntp client machine. Everything works fine except posting. If I post from my system, everything appears to work, and the posted message appears on the server machine if I then log on there and read the newsgroup posted to. However, it never leaves our site. I posted to alt.test from this account (on the server) and it worked fine, and I got lots of replys. I posted from my client machine, and while I could then log on the server machine and see the posting, I never received the first reply. It sounds to me like a problem on the server machine. Other remote clients seem to have the same problem. Does anyone out there have any ideas as to what could be mis-configured? It has to be at least partly correct since I don't get the "Don't even think of posting" message I got before I was "supposedly" validated for posting. My guess is the problem isn't a NNTP problem, but the configuration of the sys-file (/usr/lib/news/sys) isn't queueing these articles for transmission off-site. Take a look at your sys-file, the manpages for it, and if nothing else, try news.software.b, where b-news and c-news transport are discussed. (Nice to see another VM-person having to deal with *nix... I just cobbled a VM NNTPXMIT together, but it needs a lot of work. Have you seen Paul Paul Campbell's VM NNTP news-reader yet ?) I have experienced this same problem. The article header that is feed to the servers inews by nntpd is slightly different. The result is that relaynews doesn't forward the article to the systems specified in the cnews sys file. Rather than spend a lot of time debugging the relevant code, I tried using the contributed C news support for posting news via NNTP. Posting via NNTP works fine now. Look in the C news distribution directory ....
