On anumber of articles I see posted there is a "Nntp-Posting-Host:" header, however I haven't seen any posting program that generates this field. Before I go and change the posting mechanisms that I provide could somebody tell me 1) Is this header part of any standard which specifies the format and contents. 2) What if any posting mechanisms will generate this automatically. My intentions was simply to add the field something like the following Nntp-Posting-Host: <domain address> eg Nntp-Posting-Host: st_nik.swindon.ingr.com -- |--------------------------------------------------| | Nik Simpson Mail : nik@swindon.ingr.com | | Systems Consultant (UNIX). Intergraph UK Ltd. | |--------------------------------------------------|

The NNTP-Posting-Host: header line comes from sites running later versions of nntp, and it there to help discourage spoofing of news articles. The nntp server which accepted the article with a POST command is responsible for adding that header line (and eliding any such which may be received in the article to be posted), so that if an article needs to be tracked down, where it entered the news system can be identified. It is clearly not incorruptible, but it can help. If you are not using nntp to post (not transfer, POST) articles, you don't need it. No, it's not in any standard. Too new (about a year ago) for that. - Brian PS: I'd have replied to the original question by mail, but the poster's news posting software is putting out buggered From addresses and I can't reply to them.

Nntp-posting-host: was added as part of the auth extensions to nntp 1.5. It is added by nntpd when an article is posted via nntp. -- Stan internet: sob@bcm.tmc.edu Director, Networking Olan uucp: rutgers!bcm!sob and Systems Support Barber Opinions expressed are only mine. Baylor College of Medicine
