[comp.unix.microport] Welcome and an Introduction

root@qetzal.UUCP (Admin) (12/01/87)

Greetings. At last we have the newgroup for the new moderated
newsgroup comp.unix.microport. I am one of several moderators,
and my specialty is the 286 product. If you have 286 questions/
queries/source relating to a Microport SystemV/AT 286 product,
submit them to rutgers!uwvax!uwspan!microport, and they will
be bounced to my system for posting. The time delay doesn't
seem to be of concern - mail arrives here from uwspan in a couple
of hours. John Plocher, head moderator, will post the official
rules of the moderated newsgroup.

To make sure that your mail gets to the right place, include
the number 286 in your Subject: line. Most any subject relating to
Unix System V/AT, Dosmerge, and Microport driven peripherals
is appropriate. We very much like the style of comp.risks, and
will try to keep each newsletter in that format.

As you are no doubt aware, the quality of the newsgroup will be
proportional to the quality of the contributions. We would very
much like to have guest speakers, anecdotal materials, reviews,
and tutorials in this forum. If you have an interest, by all
means let us know.

To give you a little background of my vested personal interest in
System V/AT, I use my system for large data processing jobs,
and my business relies quite heavily on effective use of this
system. I use all of the Microport Software including
DosMerge with a 4 megabyte IMS clone, two tape drives (9 track and
Everex cartridge). The system is used to manipulate data and produce
9 track tapes of oil and gas Well data. We use the Text preparation
system with devps to produce manuals and marketing literature.
We invent most of our own software on a 3b1 and then port it to
the Microport system for production.

We would also enjoy hearing about how you use your system, what
hurdles you have overcome, and what your experience with peripherals
has been (particularly serial cards). If you have further questions,
or comments about the 286 end of things, do not hesitate to write
me (ihnp4!upba!qetzal!rcw) or send submissions. I would like to have
enough material to post twice weekly, but I wouldn't object to
posting material every day if the volume warrants it.

Until then,

Robert White
