[comp.unix.microport] Everex/Wangtek Tape drives and drivers under 2.3

rcw@qetzal.UUCP (Robert C. White) (02/05/88)

Is anyone actually using the 2.3 Everex Tape drivers with the
Everex Excel Stream 60 ? I have the tape drive and have been waiting
several months for the drivers. I'm curious as to how its working and if you've
encountered any problems. Im wondering how it handles retensioning of the
cartridge since there doesnt appear to be a UNIX command to facilitate
this. *ANY* input is appreciated.

[I have been using the QIC-36 tape driver under 2.3 for several
months now with an Everex 60 meg unit. Sometimes a core dump
occurs when running my 286 clone at 10 mhz with the strm utility.
The problem is solved by reducing the clock speed to a lower
speed. In general, I am pleased with the unit and the driver. The
strm utility is not as efficient as it could be, and the
tape utility is a joke. There are no IOCTLs for the tape either,
which is a bit awkward, and you must use DMA channel 1 for
both send/acknowledge, IRQ 5, and io addresses 300 301. --rcw]
