[comp.unix.microport] HDB UUCP on System V/AT

sean@killer.UUCP (Sean McCollister) (05/23/88)

The "Release Notes" that came with my System V/AT 2.3.0-L say that
Honey Dan Ber uucp is available from Microport. Has anyone obtained it, and,
if so, how well does it work? Does it include uugetty?

						Thanks!
						Sean

Unless there is something I have overlooked, the only HDB they provided is
available for downloading from their BBS if you have an upgrade or service
contract.

It does include uugetty, and works passably well, even though it does not
seem to be the latest version as documented in, i.e., the Nutshell Handbook
on UUCP, or other recent UNIX books.

The greatest drawback, in my opinion, is that this version does not support
the "Dialers" file, which lets you define modems other than what's built into
uucico; another major problem is that since "cu" is not provided, you still
need to keep around all of the old uucp data files in addition to the new ones
in order for "cu" to work. (i.e. you need both L.sys and Systems, both L-devices
and Devices, etc.).

I am quite certain that this is not the version of HDB which Microport provides
with their 386 product, and I (and many others) wish they would provide us with
binaries for the current version instead of what seems like an outdated
beta-test version.

I bought HDB UUCP and, yes, it does include uugetty (although
I don't spawn it). HDB seems to work better than the distributed
uucp for networking tasks (uucico). However, Microport
did not include an updated version of cu, so you still have
to have all the L.sys, L-devices, L-dialers, dialinfo, etc.
files in /usr/lib/uucp if you want to use cu.

I have spoken with Microport a couple of times on this and
have not gotten an answer. The first time was at Uniforum in
Dallas, so I know they got the message, and the second was
a couple of weeks ago, and still no answer.

Maybe they will see this posting and fix cu - other than that,
I recommend the upgrade for the cost ($15.00, I think).

IMPORTANT CHANGE IN MICROPORT BBS! -- READ CAREFULLY!

microports BBS not allows you to download files even if you DONT
have the infameous "SER-VICE CONTRACT". that's ALL files, including
KSH, UUCP(hdb?), and fixes. you need to call up (the bbs), login
as new, and give them the serial# off of your boot disk. within
a few days (hopefully, i just logged in last night!) you will have
ability to download files.

THANK YOU! microport, for providing this service. my opinion
of your suport efforts just rose a quantum level ;-)

(standard disclaimer: if anyone at microport has anything
to add, or a correction to make, please post it here.)

thanks again for hte support!

I have followed the discussion on HDB UUCP for SysV/AT for the last few
messages, and have seen several people mention that microports HDB doesn't
come with a new cu. When I ordered ( not downloaded ) my copy from uPort
it included a new version of cu that used the Systems, etc. files. It didn't
however include a working version of uugetty. I have had no problem with
the system, and I have been running it since november.

I too would like to thank John Sully and microport for the recent change in
policy regarding the downloading of files from their bbs. Allowing all
customers to download is one of the best moves that microport has made,
regarding technical support, in a long time.

I have always believed that most of the complaints about microport have
not really been that their product was any worse than anyone else's; just
that it has been somewhat difficult, in the past, to get timely fixes
to known bugs. Many bugs haven't even been fixed until the next release.

Things should be *much* better now that we can all get bug fixes as they're
corrected. The best part is that everybody wins; it has to be cheaper to
post than to mail :-)

Oh Yes !
Honey Dan Ber UUCP works like a charm. We have been using it to communicate
with both a SUN 3, a vax 750 running BSD 4.3. and between 2 80386 machines.
Between the 2 80386 machines we use uugetty. It's really nice to be able to
poll from both sides, but this only works with the system V systems. Uugetty
is not supported on our flavours of bsd unix :-(
