[comp.unix.microport] want to access monochrome and cga at same time

tadguy@amon-re.cs.odu.edu (Tad Guy) (06/07/88)

I'm sure this has been asked before, but until recently I didn't read
comp.unix.microport...

I am currently working on a '386 box running Microport UNIX. When it
boots, it uses the monochrome card installed as the console.

However, the machine also has a CGA card installed. I would like to
be able to access the CGA card as a tty from UNIX, but haven't found a
way to do so. I don't need keyboard input form it: I just want to use
it as an output device.

The way I would figure it would be done would be to open one of the
virtual consoles (say, /dev/cons3) and perform an ioctl on it to make
it suddenly use the CGA card instead of the monochrome card. However,
I haven't found any appropriate ioctls for this.

SO, can it be done? Can I have the monochrome card functioning as the
console and the CGA card as just another tty (without input)? If so,
how?

Code examples would be appreciated, but not necessary. If I need to
RTFM, just point out where...

(Respond by mail when possible).

Thanks.
