[comp.unix.microport] GNU EMACS on Microport?

ken@sun.soe.clarkson.edu (Ken) (06/17/88)

First off, I'm rather new to unix, so I aplogize for any stupid
questions... :-)

I'm running a Zenith Z-386 and am considering purchasing Microport
unix for it. One of the many reasons why I want to do this is so I
may run GNU EMACS 18.51 on my machine. Now, I've been using EMACSen
for years, and am pretty familiar with it. I currently use GNU EMACS
on several of our machines here at Lehigh. But, I haven't seen any
discussions here on getting it to run under Microport. Has anyone
tried this? Was it merely a matter of recompiling? Will I hate
myself for even mentioning it? :-) Any help or suggestions would be
greatly appreciated.

You'll need a 386 to run GNU emacs, but I'm sure Xenix-386 runs it too. You
may need more memory: As I type this in using 18.51 under uPort/386, it's
using 650K of RAM. You need 6.5meg of disk space to run, and maybe 10meg more
to compile & install.

Probably because it just installs without hassle. :-)

One program in etc/ generated a compiler-internal error, but it was obvious
and easy to fix. Obviously didn't use the optimizer, but it runs pretty
quick. I did use the keyboard ioctl() to remap the keyboard at the driver
level so that the backspace key would generate DEL and the keypad wouldn't
generate ESC [, and a few other useful things.

OSU has all the current GNU stuff on-line for anonymous downloads at 1200bps &
2400bps. I can make it available for Trailblazer downloads if anyone wants
to save some $$$. The compressed sources are just over 4meg.

I brought up GNU Emacs 18.50 about 2 months ago, and upgraded it to 18.51
when the diffs appeared. Some minor changes were needed to some of the
code because of S/386's inability to do "char" math (see their release
notes), a new m_ and s_ file pair needed to be created, and the keyboard
mapping needed to be done. I intend to keep GNU up to the current revision
level at this site, and to port over the GNU as, cc, c++, and other utilities
as they become available for the 386.

For those with the Everex Stream-60 tape drive (or a QIC-36 format drive),
I'll dupe you a copy of the source kit directory for the latest GNU Emacs.
Of course, you supply the tape (preferably a new one... I don't want to gunk
up my heads..) and sufficient reverse postage for this. No charge for
the copying. After all, GNU means "free", ergo I won't charge.

I have NO INTENTION of doing this for floppies. The source kit is around
17000 blocks big, and I'm not in the business of floppy distribution. Tape
is another matter... I shove it in and start it up and forget it...
