[comp.unix.microport] "new" asy.o terminal driver is much improved

karl@sugar.UUCP (Karl Lehenbauer) (06/23/88)

The "new" asy.o driver does seem to have reduced serial port hangs and
double panics here at sugar. Sugar has 3 uucp connections going right
now, one inbound at 2400 and two outbound, one at 1200 and one at 9600.
This is on an 8 MHz AT clone.

Incidentally, I have noticed that when someone hangs up on the modem
while it is sending (the condition that usually hangs the port and
causes a double panic at the next shutdown or control-alt-del), the
receive and transmit lights both flash quite a bit for a few seconds.
Perhaps the modem is echoing the characters the computer is sending
(uucp dial stuff seems to leave the modem in ATE1, so it seems plausible)
and the driver is then echoing the characters back to the modem (it would;
it's full duplex) and the modem is echoing them back in an infinite loop,
2400 baud in both directions, until the driver dies or realizes that CD
has dropped and stops sending. I offer this in case it helps.
