I have problems installing an AST 4-port card on an NCR PC 916 machine running Microport UNIX/386 release 3.0 2.2L My UNIX/386 includes DOS/MERGE and an Everex tape driver. It is a 2-user license. My problem is, that I can get the UNIX to read characters from the card, at least from the first port, but I cannot write thru the board to the terminal. I have installed the card as specified, in enhanced mode and with IRQ 3 enabled. I have removed all other cards which could use IRQ 3, including my second serial/parallel port and my tape controller. I have used ttypatch as specified in the manual with the options: ttypatch -t01 -i3 -n4 -a416 -v447 -m0 The board is set to be the first address. I get the lines on the tty interface up, pin 4,5,6,8 and 20 is high, when I open the interface. I have tried both cu and opening it with cat -u. When I address tty04 the system panics. Can anybody help me please! Keld Simonsen, University of Copenhagen keld@diku.dk

Had to acquire a Microport specific driver from Computone, a version of Locus Merge386 called 1.0a which only included files sufficient to replace atconf --- but then the fun began. -- Wain Dobson uucp: {backbone}!ubc-cs!sfu_fornax!bby-bc!seacbc!wain

Specifically, if the AST's "Interrupt Sharing" switch is enabled (SW3-3 down), the AST board is then looking for *another* AST board to be installed in your computer. If it doesn't find it, things tend to just sit there. Turning the switch ON (disable interrupt sharing) made everything work just just fine. On my system, I have a multi-purpose board on IRQ4 (parallel printer and serial port /dev/tty0), so I set up the AST for IRQ3. Here are the specifics...(I saved it in /etc/ttysetup just so I could always do it the same way again when the next system upgrade comes through): ----/etc/ttysetup-------------- # Setup for AST 4-port Cluster board # # NOTE: AST Interrupt sharing switch is set to "disabled" (SW3-3 ON) # tty1 (IRQ 3 == COM2) is not connected # # IRQ 3 # Vector 447 (0x1bf) # Channel 1 416-423 (0x1a0-0x1a7) tty2 # Channel 2 424-431 (0x1a8-0x1af) tty3 # Channel 3 432-439 (0x1b0-0x1b7) tty4 # Channel 4 440-446 (0x1b8-0x1be) tty5 # /etc/ttypatch -t2 -n4 -i3 -v447 -a416 -m0 # IRQ 4 1016-1023 (0x3f8-0x3ff) tty0 # /etc/ttypatch -t0 -n1 -i4 -a1016 -m12 # No tty1 defined # /etc/ttypatch -t1 -n1 -c System specifics: Computer: Everex CLUB/AT 1800 (i286-AT clone) Clock: 10 Mhz System: Microport 2.3.0-UM (Unlimited users, DOS/Merge) Other Interrupts: IRQ2 Voyetra MIDI Interface board IRQ3 AST 4-port board IRQ4 SUNTEK I/O Extension Board (1st serial port) IRQ5 Microsoft Mouse IRQ6 Floppy Disk IRQ7 SUNTEK I/O Extension Board (parallel printer port) AST Switch Settings: SW1-1 off SW1-2 on IRQ3 SW1-3 off SW2-1 off SW2-2 off SW2-3 off SW3-1 off Enhanced Mode SW3-2 off Channel addrs: 01A0-01BE, Vector: 01BF SW3-3 on Disable Interrupt Sharing SW3-4 off (reserved...must be off) Hope this information helps.
