[comp.unix.microport] VGA with V/AT

bill@carpet.WLK.COM (Bill Kennedy) (08/30/88)

I have a no-name clone running Microport V/AT with a 20Mb DOS partition
and the other 50Mb for UNIX. I decided to get a VGA and multisync for a
word processor I want to use (DOS) so I shopped and darned near bought.
My V/AT is 2.3.0 L.

When we put the Everex EVGA card in the system it complained about setup
so we booted from the floppy and changed the display adapter from mono to
ega (I'm using the MGA that works just fine). With the EVGA installed we
got the same result, regardless of switch/jumper settings
Flash VGA BIOS sign on
Phoenix BIOS sign on and memory test
boot (

And the system froze right there with the floppy activity light on steady,
CTL-ALT-DEL didn't work (reset did). We tried IRQ-2 instead of NMI, we
tried everything the book said to try. BTW we tried an Everex EGA and it
worked just fine, UNIX and DOS (but not as pretty :-). Now to the question,
does anyone use a VGA with V/AT 2.3.0-L? If so, which one? What did you
have to chant to do it?

I don't mind or care if the VGA has to be the secondary adapter, this is a
luggable system and normally runs the internal monitor. The VGA is for DOS
only but I still need to boot either OS the way it works now. Ideas,
suggestions are most welcome, a solution is most especially welcome, even if
it's "ya can't use a VGA with V/AT". Thanks,
