My company just got an ad from Interactive Systems for 386/ix plus VP/ix. It's very cheap for the first copy: $99. I've never dealt with Interactive; I'm wondering whether their direct sales people will deliver promptly and take care of any problems. And I am _not_ trying to start a Xenix flame war, but I want to know if there are any significant features or misfeatures of Xenix/386 that I'll miss if I change over from Xenix to System V. Any and all info appreciated; please MAIL and I'll summarize. -- Chip Salzenberg <chip@ateng.uu.net> or <uunet!ateng!chip> A T Engineering My employer may or may not agree with me. Can't comment on their $99 deal (other than they specifically state they will only do it if you plan to sell more than 100 copies of your application under their OS next year) but I can comment on their response. I'm responsible for planning upgrades from our DOS developement environment into a networked Unix environment, retaining DOS development support, of course. I sent nearly identical faxes to ISC, Uport and SCO asking a series of questions that I was concerned about (whether they had TCP/IP, whether it would work with the ethernet boards I already had, whether they supported NFS, X11R2, and so on.) Uport got back to me within an hour with a technically literate and enthusiastic salesperson. SCO got back to me within a day. They both sent packages of propoganda. I haven't heard a hoot from ISC (Been over a week now). My feeling: if this is how they go after prospective sales, how do they support post sales? Gotta say, though, that their ads ("Sock it to me, Brian") are kinda cute, tho Brian must be on an ego trip. In article <254@drd.UUCP> I wrote: >I haven't heard a hoot from ISC (Been over a week now). Well, they hooted (must of heard my plaint). Actually, I got a very nice comprehensive letter from a regional sales rep in Dallas along with a targeted package of propaganda (in other words, they only sent flyers which answered the questions I asked). Of course, I was gladdened to find out that they do support my Western Digital cheapo e-net board and want to give me a developers setup for only $525 -- if only I'll sign the little agreement they send along. Basically, they want to extract a promise that I, the ISV, will port my application to 386/ix in a _mutally agreeable timeframe_ and that they get to point to me as an application that runs under their system. And I got the cutesy ad copy wrong: it's "Yo, Brian..."
