From: Matthew J. Weinstein <matt@UCLA-LOCUS.ARPA> ``Committing itself to a major celebration of the company's ninth birthday, Zilog Inc. has promised to have samples of the Z80,000 32-bit microprocessor by Feb. 14, 1985. Having checked out the n-MOS proces developed for the processor by way of implementations of the Z8581 clock generator and controller chip, the Campbell, CA based affiliate of Exxon Corp. feels confident in predicting that the Z80,000 will run at 10 to 25 MHz, and will execute 5 million instructions per second at its peak rate. The highly pipelined machine has a memory-management unit and data and instruction caches on chip; it is designed to operate at high internal speeds while efficiently interfacing with a slower system bus. Zilog engineers have whittled the design down to 130,000 transistors, according to the firm. First silicon is due this fall.''
