[comp.unix.microport] disk-drive/controller combination

debra@alice.UUCP (Paul De Bra) (02/24/89)

I seem to recall someone posting a message that the combination
Maxtor XT4170E / WD 1007A WAH/WA2 would not work since the Maxtor
ESDI drive would be soft sectored and the WD 1007 would require a
hard sectored drive.

I am in the process of shopping for a 386 system, and someone is trying
to sell me this combination, and claims he sold this before and it works.

Can anyone comment on this? Does this combination work or not?

Thanks for any info.

Paul.

Although I am not familiar with the 4170E (I assume it is a 170meg
unformatted ESDI drive) its big brother the 4380 (380meg unformatted)
drive can be configured for soft or hard sectored operation. The
combination of the 4380 and the 1007A ESDI controller works fine, and
I know of several installations where they are being used reliably on
80386 Unix platforms. I suspect the same can be said for the 4170 drive.

Good luck with your purchase!

I've got a Maxtor EXT-4175; it is soft sectored, and will *not* work
with the WD1007. When I was trying to get my disk/controller sorted out,
the guy I finally bought my disk from said there was a hard sectored
(WD1007 compatible) drive with a number slightly different than my
EXT-4175; maybe that's what the XT-4175E is?
