I heard this one several times on the floor at UniForum in San Francisco: Microport apparently is out of business. Televideo supposedly pulled the plug. Microport is history. Does anyone know if this is true or not? -- Jeff Tye southwest!/usr/group The Southwest U.S. chapter of /usr/group c/o Copperstate Business Systems voice (602) 244-9391 ncar!noao!asuvax!hrc!swusrgrp!jeff swusrgrp (602) 275-2541

We were doing some work with Microport and have, on occassion, sent representatives to their site. During the last visit (in late January), upon returning from lunch, Microport could not get in their building. They were locked out for non-payment of rent. Since that time, Televideo has been doing some restructuring, to the extent that most, if not all, of the previous top management is gone. This includes Greg Chavis, the previous president. Televideo, at present, is committed to keeping Microport going, and they are answering their phone for problem calls. Televideo, however, has been having problems and I think I read that they had to lay-off some people (in the parent company). Microport may not have been at UniForum but Microport employees were, handing out resumes. I guess death is a relative value in the industry, but any company that lays-off all of it's programmers is brain dead. I also think it's a little dishonest to keep selling a product that will probably be unsupported in the very near future, but caveat emptor. I'm sad to see Microport go down the tubes. The existence of a competing UNIX OS on PC product was good for the market. I know for a fact that the $199 OS price made some folks at SCO nervous. The competition for employees in the Santa Cruz area also forced SCO to pay more than the industry equivalent of slave wages. ------------ Bill Baker {backbone}!tektronix!reed!wab
