[comp.unix.microport] Options for Microport Users

bryanc@haddock.ima.isc.com (Bryan Cote) (04/12/89)

So, for all those Microport users - there is a way to make good
on what otherwise could be a bad situation. Here it is:

INTERACTIVE will provide a 75% credit against the purchase of 386/ix products
for each Microport product purchases. Therefore if someone purchased a system
from Microport at $500 then INTERACTIVE will give a $375 credit against the
purchase of 386/ix!!! and for resellers its discountable....and for how ever
many systems you want to upgrade.....and they will honor the remainder of the
Microport support contracts for users upgrading to 386/ix.

Not bad.

Orders can be placed through INTERACTIVE's Distribution group in Hollis, NH
at 800-537-5324.

I'm lead to understand that SCO has a similiar program. If you have
purchased someone else's 286/386 Unix you can trade it in for SCO at some
discounted price. Don't have details but it has been available for at least
a year or so.

Could you please post the following info:

1. What constitutes acceptable proof of what one paid for one's Uport products?
(i.e. do I need an invoice showing the amount, or do they want the
serialized diskettes, and go by the last retail price, or what other
way of determining the credit amount?)

2. What are the respective prices of 386/ix components:

   -- Runtime

   -- Development System

   -- Text Preparation System/DWB

3. For some of us who are still stuck with 286 machines, would they consider
an upgrade deal to their old 286 system?

I can confirm Stuart's understanding, I was able to purchase SCO Xenix
386 as an "upgrade" by sending in the Microport build disk, ditto VP/ix
by sending in the Merge distribution disk. I thought it was decent of
them and if you're not hopelessly System V hidebound (I am), it's a
decent product. I don't know if they have extended the offer to the
new UNIX Vr3.2, but that would be an even better deal. I'm pretty sure
that you have to cut the deal with Santa Cruz, I don't think that their
distributors/dealers can do it.

In my last letter I left out a detail or two about the 75% uport for isc offer.

As far as your old microport system goes, you can still keep it. The only
thing we need in order to credit you 75% of your uport purchase price is
  1) Proof you do own uport, we will try to be flexable on this.
Any item that proves you own the product should be acceptable.

  2) Proof of purchase price. Your original sales slip or credit card receipt.
This is the most important part. Try to get something that identifies
the product(s) purchased, invoices are great.

For more complete details call 1-800-537-5324. Hope this helps
