[net.micro] Non-Apple Mac Drives

evans@mhuxt.UUCP (crandall) (03/06/84)

Does anyone know if the standard Sony 3.5" microfloppy (it lacks the
eject of the Macintosh/Sony drive and may have other differences) or the
Shugart microfloppy are compatible with the Macintosh. It is hard to pay
$500 for a SS SD drive when 1 Meg DS drives are being announced.

Standard 3.5" drives are definitely NOT compatible with the apple
mac. Apple requested special mods be made to the drives. I thought
it had something to do with increased reliability under the high density
recording.
If you want double sided drives, just wait a bit. Apple is supposed
to be embedding them in the Mac shortly.

A friend of mine who has a "software OEM" agreement with Apple tells me
that the projected ship date for double sided drives has been pushed
off until 1985. Sony, the drive supplier, is having the same trouble
getting double-sided 3" drives working as the industry had with 5" and
8" models.

no; the analog board is unique to Apple.
