I called the uport bbs yesterday. It's still up and running BUT they'd ERASED MY ACCOUNT *again* (for about the 3rd time)! I hadn't called since early September 1988 and I guess they reinstalled it just after that--of course every time they reinstalled it they threw out all the accounts and forced everyone to "reapply" for upload/download privledges. I have applied AGAIN but based on what I'm hearing I doubt there is any chance anyone there is bothering to validate new bbs accounts. WOULD SOMEONE WITH A VALID DOWNLOAD ACCOUNT be willing to send me their login information? I'd like to snag as much of the material as I can while I can. Is anyone out there making an organized effort to become an archive/clearing house/download source for Microport specific information? Perhaps a few of us could collaborate toward this end? If we don't start documentingi/archiving stuff *now* we are going to be SOL once the participation in this newsgroup begins to decline. I'd also be interested in participating in an effort to document the purpose of the misc. files in the various V/AT system directories (/etc, /bin, /usr/bin and the stuff in /usr/lib). I don't know how many of these files are "standard" to System V in general but I do know that an awful lot of them are not mentioned *anywhere* in the bound documentation. ---------- Steve Rudek {ucbvax!ucdavis!csusac OR ames!pacbell!sactoh0} !tree!stever

I've just put together a BBS based on the article in the June, 1987 Dr. Dobb's Journal. The phone number is listed in my signature. BTW, I only have 1 file available for download (boo!), but it's the 386 assembler document from the Microport BBS (yea!). It's in the Unix files section. Thomas V. I lost 2 floppies in the irradiated / magnetized airline security lines. I tried to keep them from zapping and stuff but all terrorists carry floppies, ya know. No ma'am, that's not a bomb, them's floppies. The fact they were {Precision}tm flexible disks I got in a dive computer store near downtown SJ probably didn't help. Phhhtttt! Serve me right for being in a hurry. :-( I collected both the 286 and 386 libraries. *Anyway*, I can't offer anon uucp (no dedicated phone line), ftp (not on internet, thats another posting), e-mail/floppies (don't have the time, I got a life, ... really!), but would prefer to distribute what I have to a few that can publicly offer these for distribution / archive or have first class ftp-able sites. Is this the much talked about driver? Well, sorry for being the klutz that I am, but at least this is a start for the Microport users to defend themselves until uport gets their act together or they just go away. I *do* want to do my part to support my fellow sufferers, I just don't know what is appropriate. I'll wait for mail, discussions, etc. then post the volunteers and sites and methods for access. Is this the much talked about driver? Since he was there in 1988, and the file is dated March 17, this would mean that this lp.o was last played with on March 17, 1988. Since I didn't even START at Microport till June 1988, I don't think this is the one I worked on. I am (slowly) working on recreating a lp driver, but without Microport sources (You can see why I don't want to use them, can't you :-) and without lots of free time it will take a bit. When it is done, I will post it. -John Plocher
