[comp.unix.microport] merge for Microport 2.4

frank@fas.UUCP (frank sechrist) (06/28/89)

I'm trying to install DOS Merge on an AT running 2.4 systemV/AT. After the
bootsnap procedure I get the following error msg:

	Improper_instl: dosimg: ERROR: Improperly installed.
Permission mode incorrect and/or ownership is wrong.

The installation continues and indicates install was successful. I can install
and run DOS programs with no problem. BUT, the first time the machine reboots
I get the following msg:

Login error: entering single user mode

and the root prompt appears.

If anyone has experience with this error msg or can tell me what's causing the
error concerning permissions/ownership I'd appreciate the help. Is the error
during the merge install process causing the login error after a reboot?

When I experienced this error message, it was caused by the fact that the
ownership of the file /usr/bin/dosimg was incorrect. The result of an
'ls -l /usr/bin/dosimg' should be:

  -rwsr-xr-x 1 root sys 15774 Jul 20 1987 /usr/bin/dosimg

If the permissions and ownership for the /usr/bin/dosimg do not match the
line above, change it so that it matches and restart the installition at
the step where the bootsnap procedure occurs.

Don't you just hate it when your machine lies to you :-).

I do not know if this was the cause of your logon error or not, because
when it occured to me I stopped the installation, corrected /usr/bin/dosimg
and re-installed starting with the bootsnap procedure without re-booting my
machine.
