[comp.unix.microport] Tape drive for System V/386

sjm@well.UUCP (Stephen Moehle) (09/16/89)

Many thanks to those who have responded to my questions in the past. I now
need more information. We have System V/386 3.0e.1L with a 140 Mb hard disk,
and we realized that we have no way of backing it up besides floppies. We
are looking for a cartridge tape drive, perferably one that will mount in
a PC half-height slot. Does anyone have any recommendations or warnings?
Also, does the drive work with uPort's supplied tape driver or did you
get one from the drive manufacturer, or did you have to write your own
driver? Thanks.

I use Bell's cassette drive with satisfactory results; I assume
that their cartridge would work as well. They supply drivers...
but, unless the affiliation with Intel has mellowed them, be warned
that their tech people are even harder to reach (don't even try)
than their sales people. The product is solid, however, and you
probably won't need to talk to them. They do NOT promise to
continue support for uport... but then, who cares, as the
product is "frozen"
