I've recently transferred our Usenet software to a 386 box running Microport Unix SysV Ver 3.0U3.0e (?) I have spent many hours with our upstream site attempting to change our 2400 baud modem over to our 9600 MNP5 modem. With the aid of line analysers etc. we have found the following; The "g" protocol in uucp is different from other machines. Our box tries to send it's data in enormous lumps, whereas others need a receipt for every packet. It works OK at 2400 because the next packet takes a while to be sent. This means our upstream box sends it's receipt (which is ignored) and the next packet from us begins after it. As soon as we try speeds of 4800 upwards our packets are so close together and are being pumped down the line so much faster that the upstream box loses control and everything bombs out. (Bad reads etc.) If anyone out there has tried uucico'ing with a 4800 or faster modem then please contact me. There must be a workaround out there somewhere...
