rene@ascom.uucp (Rene Bach) (08/14/90)
This is an open position announcement that Prof. Muller has asked me to
post to the news. Please get in touch directly with him if interested.
On the other hand, I hope I do not transgress newsgroups etiquette, as
this is a position open for a student.

THE INSTITUTE OF MATHEMATICS AND COMPUTER SCIENCE
at
THE UNIVERSITY OF NEUCHATEL
(Switzerland)
is offering a place for
a PhD student in the field of
Artificial Intelligence
-----------------------
for
October 1st, 1990
The Town:
---------
Neuchatel is a little town on the side of the Jura Mountains, facing the Alps
and bordering the Lake of Neuchatel.
Neuchatel is the heart of the swiss watch industry and of the "swiss silicon
valley".
The Institute:
--------------
The Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science focuses its research
activities in Artificial Intelligence. A part is devoted to knowledge
representation with an application of medical diagnosis embedded in
a full medical information system. Another part deals with action planning
and autonomous systems with applications in flexible assembly and mobile
robotics. These two parts share common interests as qualitative reasoning.
The Project:
------------
The project is to build a design system for robotized assembly units. It
consists in generating action plans and in allocating devices to sets of
actions in order to infer the specification of the assembly line. The
system has to combine action planning and constraint propagation to
solve the problem with time and cost requirements. We plan to use
multi-agent paradigm to solve the problem efficiently.
The requirements are a good training in Artificial Intelligence and
knowledge of Lisp.
The Doctorate studies have to be carried out in the context of a contract
with a local company specialized in automation: Automelec SA. The duration
is three years with the possibility to extend it for finishing the
dissertation.
