Acyl Carrier Protein, from both eukaryotes and prokaryotes, does not have an Enzyme Commission number because it has no reported enzyme activity. It is, in fact, regarded as a substrate, and as such, appears in the names of enzymes with which it interacts. The eukaryotic forms are tightly bound in the fatty acid synthetase complex, but the prokaryotic forms can be solubilized. (The PIR accession numbers for E. coli ACP's are A03398 and A26935.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Dr. John S.
