[net.micro] TRS-80 Model 100

WEBER@USC-ECLC.ARPA (03/26/84)

From: Allan Weber <WEBER@USC-ECLC.ARPA>

A friend is considering buying a Radio Shack TRS-80 Model 100 Portable
Computer and asked me if a person can upgrade the 8k ram model to a 24k ram
model for less money than paying the $200 difference in cost that Radio
Shack is asking. Does anybody know if the additional 16k ram can be added
by just stuffing in some off-the-shelf chips?

The model 100 uses rare and valuable 8K*8 CMOS static ram chips
that have not made there way to the "hobbiest market" yet. You
may be able to pick them up at a real electronics distributer for
"only" about $40 each if you have connections or order large
quantities. If you have good connections, you might try to
get a couple of "free samples"...

You can't buy standard off the shelf
kits, since the chips are special
modules with four rams/chip. You can
get identical chips for cheap from:

    Holmes Engineering
    5175 Green Pine Drive
    Salt Lake City
    UT 84107

Cost is $75/8k ram. Ask for
model IM-100.

in response to some articles claiming that 8k*8 CMOS static rams are
hard to find and expensive, no no no!!! I can think of at least five
hobbiest mailorder sources that sell them for around $40-29. This
includes Jameco and several other good, reliable places. And they
really do have them. I know. I ordered two and got them in 7 days.
Check the facts!!!

The Trash-80 model 100 uses an upgrade card to add the additional
memory, you could add the chips, but you would also see the PC card.

Try the Convergent Technologies portable. Easier to upgrade and
less expensive as well.
