It has come to my attention that some AIDS researchers are unaware of the extremely useful AIDS database produced by Los Alamos National Laboratory under the direction of Gerald Myers. The database is available on-line on BIONET in IntelliGenetics format, and directly from LANL in diskette form. Below I'm appending some general information about this database: @help aids LANL Human Retroviruses and AIDS 1989 Dated April 1989 The AIDS database is maintained and produced by the Theoretical Division of the Los Alamos National Laboratory under funding by the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome Program of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. In its original form, the database consists of both a written manual consisting of the printed form of HIV and SIV nucleic acid sequences, amino acid sequences, and related nucleic acid sequences, analysis of the sequences including alignments and phylogeny trees, as well as a diskette version of the sequences for computer analysis. It is suggested that researchers in this field obtain the original form of the database in order to acquire the extensive manual which is not available with the BIONET version. The original database is available at no cost to any interested investigator. Please see the subtopic "Contact Address" below. Although the nucleic acid sequences distributed in the AIDS database are also submitted to GenBank, the sequences often appear sooner in the AIDS database. The original sequence data files are distributed by LANL in GenBank form for nucleic acid sequences and in the older PIR floppy disk form for protein sequences. Alternatively, a subscriber may obtain the same database in EMBL format. The database is currently available in MS-DOS format, and the MacIntosh version should be available shortly. These files have been converted to IntelliGenetics format by the BIONET staff in order that users may utilize the database in conjuction with the programs on BIONET. All of the AIDS files are located in the AIDS: directory with either the extension ".seq" for nucleic acid sequence files or ".pep" for amino acid sequence translations of the open reading frames. NOTE: Some of the "sibling" HIV and SIV sequences are no longer distributed by LANL. Please read the release notes for details. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subtopics: Release Notes Using the AIDS database on BIONET Entry Name Conventions Data Submission Contact Address or press the return key to return the @ prompt.
