[unix-pc.uucp] HELP! Problem uucp'ing from SHOP

kayser@Portia.Stanford.EDU (William Kayser) (12/03/88)

I have tried gettings software from the SHOP unsuccessfully using info
I have read about in several postings. Could anyone possibly help me
out? Here are the problems:

I issued these commands separately. Neither worked. In both cases
I heard the modem on the other end of the line pick up. The errors
I got are outlined below.

uucp shop!/store/STOREROOM/CATALOG+IN /usr/spool/uucppublic/CATALOG+IN
uucp other!/store/STOREROOM/CATALOG+IN /usr/spool/uucppublic/CATALOG+IN

These are the entries in the L.sys file:
other Any ph0 1200 *70,,2019574646 "" \d ogin:--ogin:--ogin: shop
shop Any ph0 1200 *70,,2019574646 "" \r\d\r ogin:--ogin:--ogin: shop

This was the result in the LOGFILE after trying each one:
shop!uucp (12/2-13:09:11) (C,148,0) OK (DIAL ph0 P*70,,2019574646 26)
other!kayser (12/2-13:14:10) (U,180,0) QUE'D (C.othernA0036)
other!uucp (12/2-13:14:41) (C,182,0) OK (DIAL ph0 P*70,,2019574646 26)
other!uucp (12/2-13:14:44) (C,182,0) LOST LINE (LOGIN)
other!uucp (12/2-13:14:44) (C,182,0) LOST LINE (LOGIN)
other!uucp (12/2-13:14:44) (C,182,0) LOST LINE (LOGIN)
other!uucp (12/2-13:14:44) (C,182,0) FAILED (LOGIN (ph0, P))
other!uucp (12/2-13:14:44) (C,182,0) FAILED (call to other )

This was the error in ERRLOG after trying shop:
ASSERT ERROR (uucico) pid: 148 (12/2-13:09:13) BAD WRITE2 \d (0)

Also, the LCK..ph0 stays around after I make phone calls. I have to
erase it manually. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I'd really like to use the shop, but I'm stuck! Can you help me?

Willian Kayser is reporting problems contacting the "shop" ...

The enclosed material comprises the "shop" entries on my system; the ones
uncommented are those I use presently (at 2400 baud (yeah, I'm the eternal
optimist and check every week to see if the catalog was updated! :-) )

Since you're using the OBM, just be SURE the /usr/lib/uucp/L-devices has
a line line the following:

OBM ph0 UNIXPC 1200

My file contains:

ACU tty000 ark 9600
#ACU tty000 cts 2400
OBM ph0 UNIXPC 1200
DIR tty004 0 9600

The uucp commands you showed in your example were ok.

Without checking, I have the "feeling" the "*70,," in your "phone number"
may not be interpreted properly by the UNIXpc's OBM. Advice: delete the
"call waiting" service from your phone; it's a TOTAL waste of money; any
call that's IMPORTANT will be made again and again until they get through
to you; remember: people call YOU at THEIR convenience, not yours. Food
for thought, no? :-)

# shop is THE STORE!
#
# Only ONE of the groups should be enabled (i.e. no "#") depending which
# modem is finally made to function correctly. The OBM (ph0) does work, but
# 1200 baud is a pain.

Thanks for the help, everyone. One news reader was kind enough
to point out that I need to switch to DATA when dialing up.
Rather obvious, but I assumed since it dialed the number in either
case, it wouldn't make a difference whether line is on DATA or not.
In any case, the entry for "other" was the correct one. Everything
else worked fine.

CALL WAITING:

Actually call waiting has worked out very nicely. By dialing
*70+... I can disable the feature when I need to. Otherwise,
I can leave it on, stay logged on all the time, and not worry
about people not being able to reach me. It does get kind of
ugly to get disconnected, for instance, when I'm posting news,
but it hasn't been to big a problem for me.

Believe it or not, my dorm room only comes with one (!) telephone
line for me to do ALL data and voice communications.

Again, thanks for all the help.
Bill
