We have had a modem problem, too; the modem locks up whenever ^g is received. This causes the modem to go into its self-test mode, with resulting chaos. Internally, we found a jumper that would prevent this - read your documentation! (I forget which modem this was, but I think that a lot of modems do this - an example of compatibility mania!).
