I must confess some surprise that there has not been more public discussion about the impending demise of Bionet. I would like to start a campaign to keep a Bionet-like facility available to molecular biologists. It doesn't have to be run by IntelliGenetics or anyone in particular. But the NIH should be supporting the existing Bionet user community rather than abandoning them. Things are a bit unclear because of the breakup of the Division of Research Resources. Its activities are being moved to the appropriate Institute(s). However, I think it would be reasonable to petition the General Medical Sciences Institute about this topic. If you would like to have a bionet-like facility remain available, even if it isn't Bionet, please send mail to Internet: dd@lanl.gov or davison@uh.edu Bitnet: DAVISON@UHOU UUCP: lanl!dd stating that a need exists in your research for such a facility. I don't need anything long or involved, just a statement of interest. I realize that few PIs actually read the net and use Bionet, and that it's mostly postdocs, techs, and grad students who use Bionet on a regular basis. It would be better to hear from your PI, but don't be shy: what I'm trying to do is to gather enough information to show GMS that there is a need for a Bionet-like facility. In the next message I will comment on the Bionet login message by Dave Kristofferson, and attempt to refute some of the points raised dan davison/theoretical biology and biophysics/t-10 ms k710/los alamos national laboratory/los alamos, nm 87545 USA/dd@lanl.gov/505-665-1355 As always, I speak for myself and only for myself. -- dan davison/theoretical biology/t-10 ms k710/los alamos national laboratory los alamos, nm 875545/dd@lanl.gov (arpa)/dd@lanl.uucp(new)/..cmcl2!lanl!dd
