I am Hans V. Westerhoff, NIH, Building 2, room 319, Bethesda, MD 20892, USA.
I am looking forward to participate in the bionet gene-expression bboard.
I am interested in the following aspects of gene expression:
1.Its relationship to DNA supercoiling. This is where I have done some
experimental work, looking at the relationship between ADP and ATP concentratio`
ns
and the supercoiling of pBR322 (in vitro) by purified DNA gyrase.
I would like to extend this work to include the in vitro situation.
2.The control of gene expression in the system sense. Sorry that this sentence`

seems so vague. What I mean is that gene expression is determined by the
activities of a multitude of processes (the ones involved in transcription,
the ones involved in translation, the ones involved in processing, etc.) and
that I am interested in the quantitative relationship between
the activity and properties of each of these processes and the "concentration"
of the gene product in the living cell. This interest derives partly from
an earlier interest in the control of metabolism on short time scales,
such that gene expression could be considered to be constant. This part
of my interest has yet been limited to theoretical work, modelling the
quatitative aspects of histone gene expression in early development.
I have preprints on both of the above topics, as well as other topics
retlated to the control of energy metabolism more in general. Anyone intereste`
d,
please feel free to drop me a BITletter with mailaddress and Ill send them
a paper-(p)reprint.
