[bionet.molbio.methds-reagnts] Does E.coli like cellobiose ?

msz@bmc.uu.se (Michael Szardenings, Uppsala) (05/20/89)

Does anybody know, whether E.coli strains (best would be K12) exist, that
can live on cellobiose (4-{beta}-D-glucopyranosyl-D-glucopyranose) as the
only carbon-source ??? Usually this is a test to exclude E.coli-strains,
but perhaps...
I would need them for cloning experiments. They would have several advantages
when for example using a lac-promotor, as cellobiose might be cleaner than
other available sugars and is finally a degradation product of cellulose, so
that it might even become cheaper, when we use our natural sources more intense
(in some future).

Thanks Michael
