I have one Teac model 55 double sided 40 track drive in an enclosure with power supply, and it is very quiet. In fact, it made my other disk drive, a Remex, sound like a buzz saw! So, when I decided to replace my Remex with two double sided 80 track drives, I naturally chose the 80 track Teac 55 drives. Here, two of them (the look identical to the 40tk models) are fit into a single enclosure. They work just fine. Problem is, they are incredibly noisy! Just about as bad as the Remex. Not knowing much about disk drive hardware, can anyone explain to me why practically identical hardware can behave so differently? Anyone have experience with these Teac drives? On a related topic, it seems that the Teac drives have a head-load solenoid. Accessing the drive causes an audible click before any head motion occurs. I have heard rumors that a poorly written disk driver (or one not matched to the Teac 55s) could cause media damage. Should I worry about this? I use these with a TRS-80 Color Computer running OS9. -- /Steve Dyer {decvax, linus, ima}!bbncca!sdyer sdyer@bbncca.ARPA

While the 48 tpi and 96 tpi drives may have many parts in common, the stepper motor is certainly different, and so are possibly the "carriage guide" parts on which the head arm assembly moves. Your new Teac may need re-engineering.
