We use ethidium bromide very successfully to stain formaldehyde RNA gels. Add about 1 ul of a 1mg/ml solution to 15ul sample before the 55 degree incubation. The ethidium binds to the RNA, so that on electrophoresis the RNA is stained but excess unbound ethidium runs the opposite way, towards the negative electrode. To be The result is nicely stained RNA with very low background. The RNA blots and hybridises fine. Ian J. Jackson MRC Human Genetics Unit Edinburgh, Scotland
