Now for the real stuff: Thanks to those who responded about 3B machines.
It appears these are real competative machines running System V.
One caveat: the System V comes in pieces, and one does not get what is
often considered the "whole" system for the base price.

If anyone is interested in multi-user machines, I suggest you contact your
ATT rep.  The machines are in a "managed rollout" phase, and as such may not
be available in all areas.  It is, however, worth investigating.  Also, the
sales force seems to be most helpful and enthuastic.  They are not (at least
here) just the "order takers" other vendors have.
