[alt.aquaria] Strange growth

bing@mcnc.org (Carter E. Bing) (01/25/88)

I have a slight problem that I need some help on and I figured
that it would be easier to ask the net. than to take my ailing
fish into a shop.
I set up a 29 gal. salt tank about four weeks ago and last week
I bought a damsel to get the tank cycled. I noticed last Friday
that my fish had what appeared to be a small white ball growing on
it. I've kept tropical fish for a number of years and at first
I thought it could be Ick however it appeared to be larger than
what I`ve experienced before when dealing with Ick.
So after giving it some thought and discussing the condition with
a dealer I came to the conclusion that it could be some type of fungus and
I started treating the tank with Neomycin.
I noticed this morning that the Damsel was rubbing the spot against
some coral and now I starting to wonder if this could be some type of
parasite and if the Neomycin would be effective in dealing with it.
If anyone has any suggestions I would be gratful.

                    Thanks in advance!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This may not be what you want to hear but after keeping fish for a couple
of years Ive developed an attitude towards sick fish. Unless the fish is
very near and dear to you, throw it out. I know it sounds cruel and mean
and you may even hate me for saying it but just think how much this disease
can cost you. How much does the treatment cost for a $5 or $6 damsel?
What if the fish dies of the disease and you never really get rid of the
disease? Your next fish could get it. Especially with how much salt water
fish cost, you could really be talking big bucks. Now don't get me wrong,
I have treated some fish that have developed an attachment to but this
sounds like a fish you just purchased. Sorry for the pesimistic attitude...
