[alt.aquaria] Angelfish disease

gary@grc.UUCP (Gary Sutcliffe) (02/19/88)

There is apparently a bacteria disease going around that affects angelfish.
A lot of the local dealers and distributers are not carrying angelfish
anymore. Is this local to this region (Milwaukee Wis) or more widespread?

Thanks - Gary

I've read a couple of articles about this freshwater and marine
aquarium(FAMA) magazine. According to the articles I read the problem
is affecting the whole country and seems to come from any fish imported
from the far east. The disease spreads like wildfire and kills all
angelfish. It also can affect discus but to a lesser degree. I would be
very careful about buying any angelfish from anybody without some
pretty stong guarentees about where the fish came from and how long
the fish has been kept alive by the owner (the disease only takes a few
days to infect and kill). I did see some angelfish at a store here
in the chicagoland area a couple of days ago. The owner said they
were locally breed and raised.

Is there a cure for this disease, or is this the 'neon disease' of the 80's ?

Apparently not. This month's TFH (which I got last night) has a guest editorial
from a fish farmer about it. It sounds like the big breeders are pretty
worried about it. They have researchers at some university (Mo ?) working
on it, and request anyone with possible cure to help out.

This disease also attacks related species such as discus. From what they said,
fish don't last too long once they get it.
