Can anyone recommend to me an intelligent, detailed discussion of the options available to me to obtain federal income tax relief with regard to this purchase? - Toby Robison allegra!eosp1!robison decvax!ittvax!eosp1!robison princeton!eosp1!robison

My wife and I recently purchased a terminal and a modem for use at the house for strictly business purposes. You can depreciate it, typically using the 5-year scale, and claim the depreciated amount on schedule A under miscellaneous deductions. (This info was gathered from the big IRS itself, so unless they are lying...)

In the December 1982 issue of Popular Computing there is an article on "Deducting Your Personal Computer From Your Taxe$". It contains much of the basic info on how the tax laws apply, and has a program listing (in TRS-80 BASIC) which allows your computer to compute its own deprecitaion. This article should help, but the tax laws may have changed on this particular subject so I would advise seeking additional guidance or IRS confirmation of the details. From: Earl Weaver (VLD/ATB) <earl@BRL-VAT.ARPA> The current JK Lasser's income tax guide has a reasonable discussion on this subject.
