[alt.hypertext] Responses to Hypertext/Media.project idea

thom@dewey.soe.berkeley.edu (Thom Gillespie) (04/06/89)

Hi,

Below are the responses I received which seemed positive to the idea of
a Hypertext/Media.project group.

At first I was organizing the responses into yes , no and maybe catagories but
on looking at the responses I'd have to say they are all positive in the sense
everyone who responded is interested in good information about Hypertext/media
projects. The differences are in how to do it.

Many people suggested just co-op-ting alt.hypertext since it seems under
utilized. One person suggested cog-eng as also under utilized.

Most people can't see why I suggested it be moderated.

I'm interested in an accessible list of designers and thinkers and their email
addresses in some fixed spot. This could be an updated listing each month. It
would also be nice if there was an index of keywords and titles and msg numbers
for later reference. I suggested moderated so that someone could coordinate the
effort. I'd rather have somethign I could respond to immediately.

Thanks for the response and keep them coming.

Thom Gillespie

It sounds like a wonderful idea, but why not just co-opt comp.hypertext?
If it isn't busy, make it busy. . .start posting there and
cross-posting. It's the obvious right group.

the discussion group sounds good. i'll try to get a list of those
speakers to you.

there is a document put out by apple on hypercard design guidelines.
i don't know if you've seen it, but it is pretty good.

I most certainly have interest in a news group concerned with
Hypertext/Media projects. In fact, I was about to post an article
asking why there wasn't more activity in alt.hypertext.
I am working on an expert system to screen service calls and have
incorporated a hypertext-like feature in the system. The users love the
feature and it is quite effective at 'hiding' information that may not
be necessary to display.

Keep me informed.

I would be interested in a group of the sort you described. Is there some
reason that alt.hypertext could not or is very unlikely to function as you sug
gest? Is the addition of a moderator the crucial improvement?

Hi,

I am very interested in a newsgroup of this nature, I think it sounds like a
good idea. I am working in a related area and a newsgroup like the one you
describe could be useful to me. I don't think it needs to be moderated, but I
don't feel too strongly about it one way or the other.

Hello,
I would be very interested in such a group. I've studied
adult education and I'm now into computers (as an editor of an
UNIX magazine). Please respond to

Personally, I'd be reluctant to see a new group created at this time, given
that alt.hypertext doesn't have much traffic. There needs to be some evidence
that there is traffic before a group is created.

I think a better idea would be for you (and anyone else interested) to begin
posting to alt.hypertext. In a couple of months, if there is sustained
interest, campaign to promote alt.hypertext to the comp hierarchy.

(Historical note: several months ago, alt.hypertext did have quite a bit
of interest. Then John Gilmore posted some nasties to the effect that
people shouldn't discuss HyperCard in the group (on the grounds the HC is
not "real" hypertext) and most of the discussion dried up, perhaps because
people were scared away. I believe that some discussion would have the
effect of restarting interest in the group.)

It seems to me that alt.hypertext would be a good place to have it.
Since very little discussion goes on now, that's all the more reason
to change the format to include the stuff you suggested. Personally,
I don't see any reason for creating another newsgroup when an existing
one could (with tweaking) fit the bill.

Whatever happens, I would be interested in participating in such a
group. (I don't read the hypercard group because it seems to only
contain 'how do I do X?' type questions.)
