[alt.hypertext] Announcing the HyperNeWS BuLLeTiN

rudolf@turing.ac.uk (Jim Rudolf) (03/04/91)

The Turing Institute announces the creation of the HyperNeWS
BuLLeTiN (HNB), a vehicle for HyperNeWS users and the people
at the Institute to share information and ideas.

In case you are unfamiliar with HyperNeWS, here's a brief
description of the latest release, HyperNeWS1.4:

HyperNeWS is a user interface development system that uses direct
manipulation to let you develop interfaces quickly. Some features:

 - Windows are represented as 'stacks', which consist of any
   number of 'cards' and 'objects'.
 - It runs on Sun-3 and Sun-4 machines under OpenWindows2.0.
 - HyperNeWS stacks can have their own scripts or can be driven
by client programs written in C, Prolog, or Lisp.
 - It has a set of default objects (like menus and scrollable
text objects) that you can cut & paste into your interfaces.
 - HyperNeWS is free for use in personal, research, or academic
endeavors. For commercial use, please contact the Institute.
 - It is an example of what can be done with the NeWS windowing
   system.

Further information (such as where to get it) is available from
newsdev@turing.ac.uk. However, that information will also be
repeated from time to time in the HyperNeWS BuLLeTiN.

We hope you are interested in the HyperNeWS BuLLeTiN, and contribute
to its success by adding yourself to the mailing list (send e-mail
to hn-bulletin@turing.ac.uk) and by sending in items that will
appear in the pages of the HNB.

		 Introducing the HyperNeWS BuLLeTiN
		 ----------------------------------

Welcome to the premiere issue of the HyperNeWS BuLLeTiN, a new
"mailing list" for HyperNeWS users. The aims of the HNB are:

- To help HyperNeWS users to get the most out of HyperNeWS.
- To wake (what we believe to be) a sleeping HyperNeWS audience.
- To provide a channel for HyperNeWS users to communicate with
   each other.
- To provide a mode for us to communicate with HyperNeWS users.
- To increase the visibility of HyperNeWS and NeWS in general.

This bulletin will be not unlike a mailing list, except that it will
be moderated by yours truly, in order to sift out any questionable
submissions!! :-) We also thought it would be best to send out one
big piece of mail every few weeks instead of having a normal mailing
list where you would be bombarded on a daily basis (we can dream,
can't we?) with small noteworthy items landing your electronic
doorstep.

Once we get rolling, the tentative format of the HNB will be as
follows:

HEADLINES: This section will contain news of interest to the Hyper-
NeWS community. It may include announcements of new releases,
mentions of journal or magazine articles on HyperNeWS, etc.
CONTRIBUTIONS: Here's where you come in. Submissions to the HNB
(sent to hn-bulletin@turing.ac.uk) might include stackware, short
summaries of what you have done with HyperNeWS, or queries to other
users if you are wondering if a certain piece of code has already
been written. This column will also include occasional guest con-
tributions from members of the HyperNeWS team.
OCCASIONAL FEATURES: (or...filler material when there isn't much new
news :-) This will include topics that we repeat from now and then.
Scheduled topics include: what FTP servers have HyperNeWS, bugs &
their fixes, answers to common questions, what is the Turing Insti-
tute, and the "user index". The user index will be a list of users,
their e-mail addresses, and how they are using HyperNeWS. This way,
users with similar interests or applications can get in contact and
  share ideas or code.
EDITORIALS: Submissions that are not strictly technical or of a
factual nature will be included in this section.

To subscribe to the HyperNeWS BuLLeTiN, send e-mail to:
	hn-bulletin@turing.ac.uk
There is no fancy automated mail reader on this end, so the format of
your e-mail is not important...just make it comprehensible!

Disclaimer: We're new at this kind of thing, so we're taking a rela-
tively informal approach to it. We'd like to put out a bulletin every
2-4 weeks, but the actual frequency will depend upon the amount of
traffic. Any comments or suggestions about the format & content of
the HyperNeWS BuLLeTiN are graciously accepted.

Remember...send e-mail to hn-bulletin@turing.ac.uk to subscribe to
the HNB. And I encourage everyone to allow us to add them to the
users index. Just give us the nod, and include your name, e-mail
address, and a couple sentences about what kind of HyperNeWS appli-
cations you are interested in. This information will then be inclu-
ded in the OCCASIONAL FEATURES section from time to time.

The HyperNeWS team hopes you enjoy the HNB, and we hope you share our
optimism about the future of HyperNeWS and NeWS.

Cheers,
