Don't cringe... this is not a flame from Intel. I have also seen various benchmark reports of how the 286 compares with other processors. I am not in Marketing, but in Engineering, and rather informal testing performed here has convinced me that our 286-based Xenix systems (e.g., iSYS 286/310) have roughly the same power as a VAX-11/750, not a 11/780. Our tests were not really very scientific. They are a combination of gut feeling by sitting at both machines and watching the response, plus writing small programs and comparing the timing by using time(2) [the system call] and time(1) [the command]. Still, you have to admit that you can't buy an 11/750 for $10K retail.
