[net.micro] Copyright of Human Readable something ....

kurt@pyuxhh.UUCP (K A Gluck) (05/01/84)

I think that there is a misconception heere on copyrights.

Basicly the law states that IT IS ILLEGAL TO COPY THE DOCUMENT.

HOWEVER YOU CAN COPY THE RESULT>

This means that if there is a copyrighted blueprint for a chair (note
you can not copyright objects just words and drawings).
And I COPY THE BLUEPRINT AND THEN BUILD A CHAIR -> THEN I AM WRONG AND
WILL GO TO JAIL (or at least I am wrong)

HOWEVER if you copyright a blueprint then you build a chair from it.
Then I look at your chair but not your blueprint, And I build
a chair , or I draw a blueprint of mine that is derived from the chair,
neither my chair nor my bluepirint is in violation of your copyright.

This is why the corrts have been so slow in protecting visicalc etc...

I can use visicalc and not look at the code, reverse enginer it,
build a new one, and never violate any copyright law.

Howver they dont use copyright so I must say

visicalc is a trademarc of visicorp or that boston co.
