Consider this approach.
There is a company which sells software for the IBM-PC. The programs come
with a black box (all potted) which you hook to one of your serial ports.
If the box isn't there, the program won't run. The box has two ends and
is transparent to printing ASCII data. Apparently this only raises the
cost of the product $100.
