The current issue of the WHOLE EARTH REVIEW (Winter 90, No. 69), is wholly dedicated to the means by which Americans can gain "Access to Japan." These theme is dealt with by both Japanese and American authors in numerous original (historically and intellectually) articles. Most notable for the computer community are Professor Shumpei Kumon's "Toward Co-Emulation" and Dr. Hiroshi Ishii's "Cross-Cultural Communication & Computer-Supported Cooperative Work." Also, Jeffrey Shapard's "Observations on Cross-Cultural Electronic Networking" should be of interest...as well as articles on Japanese corporate and scientific culture, the status of women in Japan, Bruce Sterling's observations on the "Shinkansen" (bullet trains), Japanese carpentry, Japanese video, "Old Kyoto," and so forth. Edited by Howard Rheingold, who recently visited Japan to research that nation's growing involvement in virtual worlds technology, this issue of WER is essential reading for anyone wanting to do collaborative research or to conduct business with the Japanese. And, for the Japanese, vice versa: how to deal with Americans. Single copies are available for $6 from your bookstore or from: Whole Earth Review 27 Gate Five Road Sausalito, CA 94965 (415) 332-1716
