Thanks to all for the info on USR modems. Summary: In general reliable product. Although not FULLY compatible with Hayes, nothing major to preclude its use. Password model worth the $100 savings to give up useless LED's. Rob Botwin .....houxn!rb ATT/IS Labs (201) 949-2039 HO-(44)- 1D407

Well, let me tell you, looks is about all it had >going for it! It arrived without instructions and the guy I >talked to on the phone to get an explanation of how to use it >sounded like he had never used a modem before! Not only does >it not understand most of the Hayes commands, the one we had >wouldn't even execute the ones it was supposed to be able to! Firstly, which modem did you buy? You should mention this. Here at CMU we made a group purchase on several USR modems. We bought 25 passwords, and about 5 Auto-dial 212A and auto-link 212A's. Only 1 Auto-dial came without instructions and that was remedied immediately(1 day) by the dealer. It has been about 3 months now and only 2 passwords gave problems. One was immediately replaced by the dealer. The other was returned to USR and came back in 5 days time working perfectly. They were very prompt and courteous. They person in technical support knew exaclty what he was talking about. As for my Password I know for a fact that it gives fewer garbage character than the Hayes modems my friends own. Also it is over a $100 cheaper than the Hayes modem.( It implements only a subset of the commands and has fewer switches and LEDs. Some people say it is not sturdily built but I have had no problems.) Best of all it is really compact. I think this is your dealers problem mainly. Talk to them. Sesh. -------

<sacrifice to first-line-eaters> I have been using the USR Password for about four months now. It came with complete documentation, including a description of each instruction. I have used it with no problems for dialog & file transfers under modem7xx & USR's own telpac terminal emulator & file transfer & rcpm package. It is velcro'd to the side of my morrow md3 & no heat or other problems have manifested. Richard Patrick Symplex Communications ..!fortune!dsd!symplex!pat
