i am about to buy a MacIntosh or a Lisa which i plan to use mostly for document production. my problem is that the standard Apple software is of the word processing variety -- only good for small documents with the fonts for every letter explicitly specified and no overall processing. what i would really like is something suitable for complicated technical documents, ie an interactive document production system of troff/scribe power. this would let me specify things like chapters, lists, and cross-references plus generate things like table of contents and bibliographic references while outputing a close approximation of a final bitmapped version. is such a program available ? failing this, is there a conversion program between a Mac/Lisa document and an "equivalent" troff or scribe "program" ? in some sense, that would be even more preferable since i could then convert my program to a text troff file, download it to my local Unix system, and use the laser printer there. is anyone else out there with a Unix system and laser printer who wants to use the Mac as a powerful standalone terminal and take advantage of the available mainframe for final compilation and printing ?

I would highly recommend you forgoing the purchase of a MAC for another machine such as a Kaypro, IBM, Apple ][e, etc. - any machine using a fairly normal editor or ASCII text (non-enhanced) word-processor such as wordstar. Compose, edit, and correct on your home system and send the data to a UNIX system with nroff/troff to be formatted. MACword is far to limiting for those of us in need of industrial strength word/document processors. Just my opinion... David P.
