From: <GEORGE%GUNBRF.BITNET@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU> To whom it may concern. Please, place this message on the Bionet Bulletin Board. --------------- In reference to Roy Smith's (Public Health Research Institute) March 17 bulletin board notice. Rich Roberts' restriction enzyme list employs a nonstandard ambigious nucleotide notation that was developed prior to the IUPAC recommendations. As an alternative, Dr. Freidham Pfeiffer of the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry, Martinsreid FRG has been maintaining a set of restriction enzyme lists for the past few years. These lists incorporate information from Rich Roberts' collection and information compiled by Dr. Kessler of Boehringer, Mannheim, FRG and conform to the standard IUPAC recommendations. Dr. Pfeiffer's collection is separated into four files: LONG.ENZ - containing all currently known enzymes; SHORT.ENZ - containing one enzyme per unique recognition and cut site; AVAIL.ENZ - containing a list of commercially available enzymes; and MERGED.ENZ - containing a list of all enzymes on all of the other lists. These lists are available in the public domain and are supplied by the Protein Identification Resource (PIRMAIL@GUNBRF.BITNET), in conjunction with its databases. The lists can also be directly obtained from Dr. Pfeiffer (PFEIFFER@DM0MPB51.BITNET), from whom futher information may be obtained. David G.
