Because of the recent problems on the Internet (see the New York Times today) users that post bulletin board messages may receive Mailer Daemon messages back. These kind of messages usually indicate that the mailer programs are having difficulty reaching various sites. In particular we have had problems forwarding mail through to sites that use RELAY.CS.NET. I have also reexamined all mailing lists on BIONET and believe that all preventable mail problems are resolved. Users should be aware that as the bboard network expands around the world the odds also increase that a computer somewhere on the network will probably be down. If you post a bulletin and receive a mail message back from some "Daemon" indicating a problem in delivering mail, please do not be alarmed. The vast majority of sites are receiving your message without incident. If you have any questions about mail problems, please direct them to your closest BIOSCI bboard network node (addresses below). Forwarding a copy of the daemon message is the best way to resolve a problem since verbal descriptions are usually inadequate. Please note however, that in most cases the problems indicated by these "daemon" messages are temporary. The problem will most likely resolve itself when the down computer comes back on-line. Messages to such sites are queued for up to three days (five in some cases) and usually are eventually delivered. If after the queueing period the machine has still not come back up, then your message will be returned to you.
