I am happy to announce that BIONET now has a high speed "T1" line to BARRNET (Bay Area Regional Network) which is the regional branch of NSFnet, the national computer network funded by the National Science Foundation. T1 lines operate at 1.54 Megabits (!!) per sec or about 40 times faster than our current ARPANET link which runs at 38.4 Kilobits per second!! The BARRNET connection has actually been up and running for over a week while tests were being done on it. Our new connection will make remote logins via the "telnet" protocol (NOT TELENET!!) much more feasible and speed FTP use. (BIONET users see HELP NETWORK on-line). It will also provide a second route for mail in the event that problems develop with our ARPANET link. For those of you interested in NSFnet and future computing resources, I recommend an article in a recent issue of Science: "NSF Opens High-Speed Computer Network" in vol. 243, p. 22 - 23, 6 Jan. 1989. I'd like to thank the IntelliGenetics Computer Facilities group, headed by Rob Liebschutz, for all of their efforts in establishing the connection. Sincerely, Dave Kristofferson BIONET Resource Manager kristoff@net.bio.net or kristofferson@bionet-20.bio.net
