[bionet.general] GENCOM could be restricted

MJB1@biology.cambridge.ac.uk (03/29/89)

It is possible that Steve Bryant had a more restricted view of Genetics
Computing than Dave Kristofferson has understood. (It is true that Steve
was not very specific). The area in question might be linkage analysis
of RFLPs from studies in human families and related areas of human
genetic analysis. People do not seem to keep databases of linkage
data which is probably a mistake (at least, they are not made public).
Information on single factor inherited disorders is in OMIM (Online
Mendelian Inheritance in Man) and mapped probes and genes are in HGML
(Human Gene Mapping Library).

Perhaps a bulletin board could be defined which related primarily to
human genome projects (internationally)? I expect it would be important
to include mouse as well, plus relevant techniques from genome mapping
of other organisms (Drosophila, Caenorhabditis, Arabidopsis etc.).

It might be worth consulting HUGO (the Human Genome Organisation) on
the constitution of such an international bulletin board.

Sorry for the delay in responding to Martin's suggestion (I've been a
bit under the weather lately). The GENOMIC-ORGANIZATION bboard is
intended to cover many of these issues and I have lined up two
moderators from HHMI and LANL. I was just exchanging messages with
them earlier this morning and I hope to get things rolling soon.
