[My apologies for the delay, I've been at a conference] >To some extent the BIO-MATRIX newsgroup touches on this >issue, although my understanding of the Matrix groups goals makes me >believe that this group is primarily interested in biological database >questions and knowledge representation. In this regards GENCOM may >cover a broader area. Another term for the Bio-Matrix would perhaps be bio-informatics, although there are philosophical issues encompassed in the former (which I won't go into here ;->). The issues Steve Bryant is interested in (sounds like correlating genetic linkage info with RFLPs) such as the design of the user interface and data handling are exactly what the Bio-Matrix list and Project are interested in. >Before calling for a vote on GENCOM I would first like to hear from >Dan Davison, the moderator of the BIO-MATRIX group, as to whether or >not he feels that the above is significantly different from BIO-MATRIX >to warrant a new group or whether a better policy is just to use the >BIO-MATRIX newsgroup for such discussions. I think it would be an appropriate use of the BIO-MATRIX list to discuss genomic information problems for now. Certainly if there is a lot of traffic or complaints the two interests can be split at a later date. The Bio-Matrix concept is an evolving one and at this point I don't see any reason to limit discussion. dan davison goad.davison@bionet-20.bio.net dd@lanl.gov
